Airlines blame US economy for spiralling financial losses
THE SLOWDOWN of the US economy has been blamed for a further six airlines reporting financial losses.
American Airlines, America West, Delta, Northwest, United Airlines and the US Airways Group have all reported losses for the first quarter of this year. United fared the worst with a $313 million loss, compared with a $99 million loss in the same period last year.
Profits at American Airlines’ parent company, AMR, fell by $43 million, contrasting with a $132 million profit this time last year. America West’s losses of $12.8 million compare with a $14.6 million profit for the same period in 2000.
Delta lost $133 million, against a $216 million profit last year, with Northwest and the US Airways Group both suffering losses of $171 million.
