Tesco insurance policy to cover legal expenses

HOLDERS of Tesco travel insurance will in future be able to
sue their travel supplier if they are unhappy with the quality of service
received.

The supermarket giant has reworded its policy so holders who
experience delays or are unhappy with their hotel can take legal action against
their operator, agent or hotelier.

They can then claim the cost under their policy if Tesco’s
legal team believes there is a case to answer.

Under the current system, holidaymakers with a complaint
rely either on ABTA to resolve the dispute or must use their own money to
pursue a case through the courts.

Tesco personal finance director Andy Dewhurst said the
changes would stop “unscrupulous tour operators” from “ripping off
holidaymakers by the thousand.”

ABTA head of legal services Riccardo Nardi hit back. He
said: “People can already use the ABTA arbitration scheme or the small claims
court. An insurer-based claim may even cause a delay in the result.”
