Universal Orlando

With the opening of Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park and CityWalk entertainment complex just over two years ago, Pow Wow gives many UK delegates their first chance to sample the new attractions and on-site hotels.

Those that have already experienced the entire 840-acre Universal Orlando complex, which also includes the original Universal Studios Florida, can check out the new rides and guest rooms at the latest property, the Hard Rock Hotel.

This year’s newcomers include Storm Force Accelatron, which spins 360 degrees, and the Flying Unicorn roller coaster.

In addition, Animal Planet Live! is a new show that opened this spring. It is based on the popular Animal Planet US television series and includes animal shows and video clips from programmes such as Emergency Vets and The Planet’s Funniest Animals.

These additions follow the launch of a high-tech ride entitled Men in Black: Alien Attack, described by its designers as “the world’s first life-size, ride-through, interactive video game experience”.

Riders take up an interstellar pursuit of “inter-galactic terrorists” with the aid of laser zappers in an effort to score points.

All of the attractions in Universal’s Islands of Adventure park are located within themed areas including Seuss Landing, Toon Lagoon, Marvel Super Hero Island and Jurassic Park.

On the nightlife and entertainment front, CityWalk offers an extremely wide choice of dining and music venues.

These include the world’s largest Hard Rock Café and Hard Rock Live Orlando, a 2,200-capacity venue featuring a variety of top international musicians and singers.

There are also live performances at CityJazz, including the Down Beat Hall of Fame, the Motown Café and Pat O’Brien’s, modelled on a New Orleans watering hole.

If Latin music and dance are what you are after, then the Latin Quarter features food and entertainment from 21 Latin American nations in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
