Budapest
Budapest was formed in 1873 with the merging of the Buda, Pest and Obuda settlements and the three parts still retain clear identities. The Danube divides hilly Buda to the west and flatter Pest to the east; Obuda is now a suburb on the Buda side. The Castle District of Buda, with Baroque houses, the Royal Palace, Matthias Church and scenic views of the Danube, is a year-round attraction. Parks, spas and Roman remains dot the city. Highlights of Pest include the parliament building modelled on the UK’s Palace of Westminster, the cathedral and Opera House.
