Terminal 3 development aims to cut waiting time
Report by Louise Longman
AIRPORT operator BAA has completed a £15 million development at Heathrow Airport in a move to reduce queues and improve the general environment of the airport.
The operator said the development will mean passengers will have a shorter wait before entering the departure lounge through a new central search area, part of an upgrade of Terminal 3 departures.
The search area, which comprises a new glass wall, barrier systems and boarding-card desks, will provide an extra 74 sq metres of space in the terminal’s airside security area and will be able to handle up to 3,500 passengers an hour.
The area is to be expanded by 2003 to offer 10 search positions including two fast-track facilities for premium and first-class passengers.
Terminal 3 handles long-haul flights, with Terminal 1 offering domestic services and Terminal 2 European flights.
Terminal 3 general manager Murray Thomas said: “We understand that we have a long way to go before Terminal 3 is able to offer passengers a hugely improved experience, but we are investing around £100 million in new facilities to help cope with our increasing number of passengers.”
The next stage of work, due to start this month, will add an extra 30,000 sq ft of lounge facilities, more seating, a new play area for children, additional retail outlets and catering facilities. The total project is due to be completed by 2003.
