TOP TIPS FOR DRIVING IN SPAIN
Speed limits are given in kilometres per hour (kph), not miles per hour.
The speed limit in built-up areas of Spain is 31mph (50kph), or 56-65mph outside built-up areas (90-100kph). On motorways the limit is 74mph (120kph).
In urban areas, horns may only be used in emergencies.
Police can impose fines of up to £196, which must be paid immediately by visitors – unless it can be guaranteed by a person or company in Spain – or their car will be impounded.
Children under 12 years of age must sit in the back of a car unless they have an approved child seat.
Motorists who wear glasses for driving should ensure that a spare pair is carried in the vehicle.
When overtaking outside built-up areas, signal your intention by sounding your horn in the daytime, or flashing your lights at night.
You must not overtake a stationary tram while passengers are getting on and off the vehicle.
Cars being parked in one-way streets on uneven dates of the month must be parked on the side of the road where the houses have uneven numbers, and vice-versa.
Drivers must carry a replacement set of bulbs for the car.
