Riots spark fears for island’s holiday image

TOUR operators are closely monitoring the situation in
Jamaica following an outbreak of civil unrest and admitted they are worried it
could dent the island’s image.

Sandals managing director UK Nigel Cleevely said: “It’s not
going to help the island in terms of tourism and it’s not going to help us in
terms of bookings, but I don’t think it will be too bad.”

“I’m always concerned for the safety of guests wherever they
travel but I’m confident, with the reports we’ve received from the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office, the Jamaica Tourist Board and from our managers on the
spot, our customers will be well looked after.”

Superclubs marketing manager Europe Annabelle Marshall
stressed the problems were occurring in Kingston, at least 50 miles away from
resort areas. She admitted Superclubs had received calls from concerned clients
but said the firm was not waiving cancellation fees.
