A month after the attacks, holidaymakers are still nervous about visiting New York and other major US cities. Bookings to Las Vegas, California and Florida have remained steady, but sales to New York have slumped in the past four weeks. Premier is planning to promote alternative destinations like Hong Kong and Thailand heavily.
The phones at Accoladia – the joint venture between British Airways Holidays and Thomas Cook Holidays – started ringing last week with queries about the US for the first time since September 11. Around 35% of its US trips to Boston and New York in September were cancelled in the aftermath of the attacks, but most customers have already rearranged their trips for early next year.
