Make the most of your time and visit more than one Greek island

Even if visitors to Greece are on a package holiday, it’s not unheard of for them to take a ferry trip or bus ride to a different island or resort for a night or two.

Transport in Greece is relatively cheap. A two-hour bus ride from Athens to Nafplio costs £5 per person, while a connecting, 10-hour ferry trip from Samos to Rhodes is £12 per person. But there are a few golden rules to bear in mind, particularly when travelling by ferry.

First of all, ferries can get very busy, particularly in the high season, so it’s advisable to book in advance. Ferries operate to chains of islands from their hub in Athens. It’s easy to hop between islands on the same chain, but crossing to a different chain can be difficult.

Annoyingly, it’s nigh-on impossible to obtain correct information about how best to get to a destination from ‘travel agencies’ – which are generally agents for only two or three ferry lines and who either don’t know, or don’t want to tell you what services their rivals offer.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Athens, the hub for all ferry connections, has three separate ports: Piraeus, Zea and Rafina. Don’t be put off though – island hopping is great fun and an excellent way to see a bit more of Greece. Check out our guide some of the best places to visit:
