Events should not cloud our judgement

News of another aircraft crash in New York will no doubt have the obituary writers scrabbling for their pens ready to announce the demise of the travel industry as we know it.

But, as mayor Rudolph Guilliani advised New Yorkers, it is imperative that we all remain calm.

If, as it seems likely, the incident was a tragic accident, its effects on our industry will be short-lived.

People will realise that thousands of aircraft take off and land every day without incident and, while there may be an initial blip in bookings, business will pick up.

What we must not do is allow the events of September 11 to cloud our judgement.

It is understandable that the initial reaction to news of last week’s crash was “please God, not again”.

But once it has been established beyond doubt that this was not the result of terrorism, it is crucial we send that message out, loud and clear, to our customers.

They must be left in no doubt that it is just as safe to fly this week as it was last week and, because of heightened security, even safer than it was before September 11.
