Cosmos changes to woo independents
The changes announced at Cosmos last week mark a significant shift in the company’s focus and a recognition that it has become even more difficult to compete with the vertically integrated operators since September 11.
But in the new world order, it’s not about joining the big boys. These days, profit, not market share, is king.
No doubt the move will mean taking some tough decisions, and reducing capacity will put pressure on Monarch Airlines. But with competitors switching to third-party flying out of some regional airports, there may be other opportunities around the corner for the carrier.
And with the Big Four placing greater emphasis on selling their own product, many independent retailers will be looking to form alliances with other tour operators. As our letters pages show, there is a gap in the market for a large, agent-friendly operator and this could finally solve Cosmos’ supposed problems with distribution.
Rumours of Nigel Wright’s departure have been circulating for months and it must be a relief to everyone to finally get things out in the open.
Cosmos has made its move. Terry, it’s over to you.
