Netherlands initiative to target UK
THE Netherlands Board of Tourism has launched a three-year campaign to promote The Hague, Maastricht and Rotterdam in the UK.
The move comes as UK visitors numbers top all other European tourists to the three cities for the first time. UK visitor numbers to The Hague were up 20% in 1999, with Maastricht and Rotterdam each recording an increase of 10%.
The tourist board has teamed up with Stena Line, P&O North Sea Ferries, DFDS Seaways and KLM in the UK and the local tourist boards to run the campaign, which will be split into advertising and promotional activity. It will cost about £1 million a year.
Netherlands Board of Tourism UK director Jos Vranken said the tourist office would contribute one-third of the money, with the rest to come from the campaign partners.
He added: “We have run joint promotions with these partners in the past, but this time we are taking a more long-term approach.
“The agreement is that we will run a three-year campaign, but the detail of what we do and the financial side will be discussed on an annual basis.”
The tourist board will also provide relevant website content and brochure material.
