AIRLINES have been forced to axe flights on September
11 as nervous passengers refuse to fly on the anniversary of last year’s terror
attacks.
Heathrow and Gatwick services to major US airports are
reduced as international carriers take steps to lessen the financial risk of
flying empty aircraft.
Airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic,
Air France and American Airlines will cut schedules to reflect the lack of
demand.
BA destinations affected include San Francisco,
Washington, New York JFK, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, Phoenix, San Diego and
Orlando. The carrier is also dropping one Barbados service.
A total of 13 BA transatlantic return flights are
scrapped – a third of the usual daily schedule.
Virgin Atlantic has cut two Heathrow flights to New
York JFK and Los Angeles and one from Gatwick to Orlando.
BMI said it will operate its
Manchester flights to Chicago and Washington as normal.
