Agents face delay over BA commission decision

AGENTS will have to wait until the end of the month to find out if British Airways will scrap commissions as part a plan to replace its Interim Bonus Agreement.

The airline was expected to make an announcement next Monday but it has been delayed until the new scheme is checked by lawyers and the airline completes a review of its e-commerce policy.

It is believed BA will introduce a revised interim agreement until the end of this year, then replace it with 0% commission across the board in 2001.

The current scheme, which runs until March 31, pays a basic commission of 7% but it is proving costly for the airline to implement.

Meanwhile, ABTAhas given BA, Virgin Atlantic and Lufthansa until January 20 to find a way of recompensing the three agents who won the Passenger Service Charge case. Jetset Europe, Majestic Travel and Phoenix Travel won the High Court case in November after the airlines stopped paying commission on PSC. The payment method the airlines agree to is expected to be used for industry-wide compensation if the carriers have their appeal turned down.
