Denmark

What do you think of when you think of Denmark? Copenhagen, Vikings, Hans Christian Andersen, perhaps?

What you may not think of is a country just across the North Sea from the UK offering great city breaks, fabulous beaches, interesting culture, history and, most importantly, what we call ‘hygge’ – a Danish word that is all to do with being at ease with ourselves.

It’s a good word because Denmark is all about being relaxed. There is no road rage, bars stay open until the early hours, buskers are free to entertain street crowds and life in general takes on a very easy, leisurely pace.

Many people do not know that Denmark is made up of lots of islands. Funen, Sealand, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm are the best-known, but then there are numerous other small islands dotted around the western approaches of the Baltic Sea.

Greenland and The Faroe Islands are also covered by the Danish Tourist Board in the UK and Ireland, and are regions that offer stunning nature and scenery, mountains, fjords and icebergs in the North Atlantic.

First-time visitors to Denmark are almost certainly unaware that some of the most famous designers are Danish, that

shopping is a national pastime and that this is the place to come for activities, such as golf, cycling and windsurfing.

Copenhagen has always been Denmark’s biggest export – a lively city that can truly claim the title of cruising capital of the Baltic. It offers everything visitors could want from a city-break, but as this guide seeks to show, there is a lot more to Denmark than its capital.

The cities of Århus, Odense, Aalborg, Ribe and Esbjerg are now all accessible from the UK thanks to new direct flights with Maersk Air and Ryanair and are perfect city-break destinations.

Visitors who want to stay longer can hire a car or bike and explore the area. The open, almost empty roads make Denmark an ideal flydrive destination – nowhere is very far and there is lots to see en route, from rolling countryside and white-sand beaches to castles and manor houses. Come summer, there are numerous amusement parks with thrilling – and wet – rides for the kids.

Help is at hand

This coming year, the Danish Tourist Board will be actively promoting city breaks, not just to Copenhagen but also Århus, Odense, Aalborg, Ribe and Esbjerg.

This is in addition to promoting coastal tourism, self-catering, flydrive holidays, cruising from Copenhagen and disabled travel – Denmark is proud to be one of the most accessible countries in Europe for wheelchair-bound visitors.

So, thank you for your on-going support, and get turning the pages to discover more about our fascinating country.
