Golden Sun in spat over hotel cash

GOLDEN Sun Holidays has had to settle unpaid bills to a
Corfu hotel to avoid 40 holidaymakers being evicted from the
property.

As Travel Weekly went to press, holidaymakers at the
Silver Beach Hotel in Roda faced an anxious wait to see if Golden
Sun had paid the money which would stop them being evicted from the
hotel.

Earlier this week, the hotel’s manager Matela Geovaphae
delayed the customers from checking in for two hours until she had
received assurances from the eastern Mediterranean operator the
bills would be settled.

She told the holidaymakers they faced eviction if the money was not
received by the end of the working day on Wednesday.

“We have spoken to our lawyers,” said Geovaphae.
“The check-in was delayed and customers were informed there
could be a problem.”

Golden Sun general manager Roger Cross admitted there was an issue
with the hotel over payments, but said the money would be paid by
the end of Wednesday.

“We have come to an agreement and the clients will not be
inconvenienced any further. They are enjoying their holiday,”
he said.

“The hotel wants to make sure it gets the money by the end of
the season, so it has put the pressure on us.”

Cross slammed the hotel for using the disruption of
customers’ holidays as a threat to force the operator to pay
out.

“The hotel has got a bee in its bonnet and this sort of thing
should not be happening.

“But these things do occur in the industry when you are
dealing with hotels thousands of miles away.”
