Virgin Atlantic MD questions sense of joining an alliance

VIRGIN Atlantic strongly hinted that the airline was unlikey to join an alliance in the near future.

Managing director Steve Ridgway said it was very difficult for Virgin to join any present grouping.

His comments come despite chairman Richard Branson reportedly saying Virgin was close to an alliance deal, possibly as early as next spring.

But Ridgway said: “We have clear parameters to go forward. We started as a niche player in the market and still are one.

“We are watching what is happening out there, but are not going to compromise our product, presence or service in any way.”

Star Alliance has emerged as a likely suitor for Virgin as some group members either already have strong commercial deals with the UKcarrier or are set to sign agreements.
