Ocean Village is to take on a second ship following the
successful performance of the informal cruise brand, launched in
2003.
The 1,690-passenger Regal Princess will transfer from sister
brand Princess Cruises to begin Caribbean flycruise itineraries in
winter 2006/07, moving to the Mediterranean in May 2007 for summer
sailings.
Managing director Peter Shanks said the brand had proved itself
a strong performer in terms of profitability and customer
satisfaction.
“We have achieved what we set out to and our profitability is
ahead of targets. It is important for Carnival UK we continue to
bring in new cruisers.”
The original 1,578-passenger Ocean Village, which pitched itself
as ‘the cruise for people who don’t do cruises’
has to date taken more than 150,000 bookings, 60% from first-time
cruisers. Shanks said the new ship will feature three times as many
balconies, but have a similar layout to maintain familiarity with
repeat passengers.
Features on board both ships include two pools, eight bars, four
restaurants, a theatre, cinema, spa and nightclub. Celebrity chef
James Martin will extend his association across both ships. Shanks
said there was room for further ships to join the brand in the
future. “There is every sign demand is strong,” he said.
