24-hour ban on under-18s passengers in France

All coaches carrying people under the age of 18 have been banned from taking to the roads in France tomorrow, when the traditional holiday season starts.

As with previous years, the restriction has been brought about due to an increased chance of accidents occurring at the start of August. The ban will be enforced from midnight tonight (July 29) and will last for 24 hours. Major traffic jams are also expected.

The French authorities have stated the only exceptions to the ban are journeys that start and finish in the same ‘départment’ (administrative region) of the country. They have warned any driver caught ignoring the restriction could be fined and their vehicle immobilised.

Coach companies with passengers under 18 years old have been advised by ABTA to delay any departures or arrivals which require driving through France until the ban has lifted.

Coaches travelling from abroad will be considered to have started their journey in the region they enter when they cross the border.
