US airlines file for bankruptcy

Two more US airlines filed for bankruptcy yesterday in a bid to lower costs and restructure finances.

Both Delta and Northwest Airlines filed for Chapter 11 reorganisation, which under US law will allow both companies to restructure their finances to pay creditors while continuing to operate as normal.

No services are expected to be affected by the move. Transatlantic carrier Delta has said it will continue regular operations during the reorganisation process although it has plans to rationalise its fleet and network to concentrate on the most profitable international routes.

The move means that four of the largest seven US carriers are now in identical situations after United and US Airways also filed for Chapter 11.
