THE Department for Transport has backtracked on its earlier, incorrect, statement that all Gatwick Express direct services will be axed.
Last Friday the department published a report quoting transport minister Derek Twigg as saying “it will be necessary” for non-stop trains between Gatwick and Victoria to make additional stops from summer 2007.
Commuter trains from Brighton to London are currently running at close to capacity. A DfT spokesman has now stressed that the previous statement was incorrect but remained cautious on the service’s future.
He said: “Is the Gatwick Express dead or alive? It is too early to say because we now need to speak to the three rail operators using the line to see how we can meet the objectives of both airport users and commuters.”
A new schedule is expected by summer 2006 and implementation should take place in mid-2007.
