SABRE Travel Network is offering business travel agencies the chance to produce reports for corporate customers on the environmental impact of flights.
These will detail the distances flown on business travel, the amount of fuel burned and kilograms of carbon dioxide – the biggest cause of global warming – produced.
Companies can then offset the greenhouse gas emissions by contributing to tree-planting schemes, buying carbon credits or reducing carbon dioxide produced in other areas of the business.
The global distribution system believes corporate travellers are among those demanding the environmental impact of travel be minimised.
Sabre Travel Network senior vice-president for Europe Richard Adams said: “We developed this in response to demand from Scandinavian companies, but there is no doubt corporations are starting to be more environmentally aware.”
A spokesman for the Institute of Travel Management said: “There is a lot of momentum to ensuring travel is undertaken in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way. Corporate social responsibility will be the biggest issue in this industry over the next year.”
However, a rival GDS Galileo spokeswoman said: “We’ve seen no demand from travel management companies for this kind of product.”
Sabre’s Greenhouse Emission report is compatible with its existing booking tools.
