Industry seeks its Geldof for ‘Travel Aid’

THE HUNT is on for travel’s very own Bob Geldof as momentum gathers behind a proposed industry version of Live Aid.

Travel Weekly columnist and Lowcostbeds.com chief executive Paul Evans mooted the idea of Travel Aid following calls at this year’s Institute of Travel and Tourism conference for a trade body to tackle environmental issues.

A target of £5 million has been set. The money will be donated to good causes and existing charities such as Just A Drop and raised through fundraising activity, culminating in a national event to highlight the travel industry’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

Evans said he needs a big name to chair a committee of travel’s ‘great and good’ and to make sure Travel Aid captures the public imagination.

“We need to position ourselves as an industry that’s responsible. All we hear about is aviation fuel,” Evans said.
