Hotels to get ‘Green Medals’

THOMSON plans to award a series of Green Medals to the hotels it features that have the highest environmental ratings, based on water use, energy efficiency, recycling of rubbish and staff wellbeing.

For a hotel to qualify, its staff must have employment contracts, be paid at least the minimum wage and be covered by health and safety policies.

The awards system should be in place before the end of the year, allowing customers to select properties with socially responsible credentials.

Manager for corporate responsibility Kimberley Kay sees it as a TUI ‘fair trade’ mark and hopes 50 to 100 hotels will qualify. “It will give people a green option,” she said.

The medal-winning properties will feature in brochures and on a sustainable tourism section of the Thomson website.
