Thomas Cook defends safety standards – 30 Oct 2006

Thomas Cook has defended its safety standards after two British children died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in their Corfu hotel room.

Four staff at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel are facing manslaughter charges over the deaths of seven-year old Christianne Shepherd and her six year old brother Robert.

The hotel manager, owner and two maintenance staff face up to five years in jail if convicted.

However, Thomas Cook chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa said the tour operators procedures are “stringent and robust to insure the safety of all its customers at the properties it features.”

Fontenla-Novoa stressed its procedures are in-line with those of the Federation of Tour Operators’ codes of practices.

He also said the last audit of the hotel showed it had met all FTO requirements, as did audits from other UK tour operators.

The operator moved all guests from the suspect bungalows and has given them the option to switch hotel.

Hotel manager George Chrysikopoulos added the boiler under police investigation had been inspected by an independent expert in April.
