Cammell Laird Holdings Plc, the former British shipbuilder, has been told it must pay damages to Costa Cruises following a dispute about an aborted ship lengthening in 2000.
Costa Classica was due to have a section inserted by the shipyard but the ship was never sent to the yard, the Carnival-owned Italian cruiseline claiming the Cammell Laird had failed to complete the construction work.
The arrangement with the shipyard was cancelled in January 2001 and the case was referred to arbitration which upheld Costa Cruises’ reasons for terminating the contract.
The three arbitrators, chairman Professor Pietro Trimarchi, Prfessor Guido Alpa and Lucio Crispo, ordered Cammell Laird, which is in administration, to pay undisclosed damages to the cruiseline.
