ABTA will advise holidaymakers which environmental projects they should support in its role as the public face of a new carbon offsetting scheme.
The association is joining forces with the Association of Independent Tour Operators and the Federation of Tour Operators to launch the scheme next year, which will encourage consumers to minimise the amount of environmental damage their holidays cause.
While ABTA will help choose schemes relevant to customers’ trips, it will also raise awareness among consumers and the industry of the need to take greener breaks.
Head of business development and consumer affairs Keith Richards said: “We aim to make a clear connection between the money invested and projects in the kind of destinations where people holiday. This will encourage more to use the scheme.”
