BA backs down over reglious uniform policy – 22 Jan 2007

British Airways has performed a policy u-turn over staff uniforms by allowing employees to wear religious symbols.

Following a ‘comprehensive review’ the airline has climbed down from its hard-line policy, which banned workers from wearing visible religious symbols .

The review came after BA Heathrow check-in worker Nadia Eweida took unpaid leave in September after being told she could not wear her crucifix chain while on duty.

The airline received a raft of criticism for its policy, which allowed Muslims workers to wear Hijabs, Sikh workers to wear turbans but barred Christians from wearing a cross.

The new policy will come in on February 1.
