100 MyTravel call centre staff to lose jobs – 31 May 2007

Around 100 MyTravel staff could lose their jobs after news the company’s Royal Quays call centre in North Shields, Newcastle, is to close.

The company said the decision had been taken because customers are turning their backs on telephone booking in favour of the web. A 90-day consultation starts on June 6.

The call centre is home to MyTravel’s customer services division and takes sales calls for Going Places, MyTravel and Airtours Holidays.

A MyTravel spokesman said: “It is our intention to redeploy as many staff as possible.”

One worker said: “It’s come as such a shock and we don’t know what we’ll be offered.”
