Passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport (EMA) rose by a fifth (21.5%) to 1.94 million for the first five months of 2007, compared to the same period last year.
In May an increase in international scheduled traffic saw the airport handle 483,077 passengers, marking an 8.6% increase year-on-year – the fifth consecutive increase this year.
EMA managing director Penny Coates called the figures “encouraging”.
“Our improvements made to the terminal over the winter period are having a positive effect on our customers to help them unwind, relax and shop before they travel,” she said.
New routes at EMA in May included Cuba and the Dominican Republic, with flights to Jamaica set to commence in July.
