The Thomas Cook Group has refused to confirm reports that up to 2,500 jobs could go as a result of the MyTravel / Thomas Cook merger .
A story in Saturday’s Daily Mail said the newly formed Thomas Cook Group (TCG) was set to announce the job losses this week, ahead of Thomas Cook posting its interim results on Wednesday.
As previously revealed in Travel Weekly, TCG is to shut MyTravel’s Rochdale office and focus on Thomas Cook’s headquarters in Peterborough as part of its plans to make £100 million of cost savings.
But this is the first time that a figure has been put on the scale of the job losses resulting from the merger.
A TCG spokesman refused to comment on the figure but confirmed the company would be making an announcement on the scale of the losses on Wednesday to coincide with the release of Thomas Cook’s interims.
It is unclear how the job cuts will affect the Going Places brand. Earlier this month TCG chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa said the company would keep the brand going despite the overlap between its shops and those of Thomas Cook.
