Security update – UK airports report return to normal – 3 July 2007

UK airports were largely operating normally today despite heightened security measures following the car-bomb attack at Glasgow airport on Saturday and attempted bombings in London.

Private cars remained banned from most terminal forecourts, with airports operator BAA recommending passengers use public transport. Heathrow and Gatwick have lifted some vehicle-access restrictions, but most drivers are being directed to short-stay car parks to drop off and pick up passengers.

Those travelling by private car are advised to allow extra time for their journey to the airport.

BAA said six of its seven airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton – were operating normally, with a full schedule of flights. Luton Airport was also operating normally.

BAA-operated Glasgow continues to experience some delays following its closure at the weekend and the forecourt remains closed as police continue to examine the scene of the attack. Nine flights were cancelled yesterday – including four departures – out of a total of 300. A similar number are expected to be cancelled today, with passengers urged to contact their airline to confirm the status of their flight.

The attack on Glasgow coincided with the start of the school holidays in Scotland. However, the real test of airport security will come when the schools break up for the summer holidays in England and Wales in mid-July.
