Skiathos forest fires force Kosmar to evacuate holidaymakers – 13 Jul 2007

Greek specialist operator Kosmar evacuated 450 holidaymakers yesterday after forest fires raged on the island of Skiathos.

A fire broke out in a refuse dump early on Thursday morning in the resort of Aghia Paraskevi. The fire spread two other Skiathos resorts, Troulos and Kolios, due to strong winds.

Members of the Federation of Tour Operators had more than 750 UK holidaymakers evacuated from properties affected by the fire.

There have been no reported casualties.

Kosmar overseas manager Tracy Sharp said guests staying at properties in the three resorts were evacuated for most of Thursday to the Port of Skiathos and another part of the island.

By Thursday evening all Kosmar customers had returned to their hotels, except for guests at one one property in Troulos.

Sharp said: “Our clients are now back in their properties and we are back to normal with flights coming in and out. We have had extra personnel flown in from other areas to relieve staff.”
