Heathrow flights unaffected by protests – 20 Aug 2007

Heathrow operated normally throughout the weekend, one of the busiest of the year, despite a demonstration by up to 1,500 protesters and the attention of the world’s press.

Attention overnight and Monday morning focused on the headquarters of airport operator BAA as about 200 people blockaded its car park.

On Sunday demonstrators marched through the village of Sipson close to the airport, which is threatened by plans to build a third runway, and there was a brief blockade of a British Airways depot.

Police and security guards outnumbered the peaceful protesters by more than two to one.

The demonstrations aimed to draw attention to aviation’s contribution to global warming and called for a halt to expansion at Heathrow.

Protesters have been at a camp for climate change close to the airport’s northern perimeter since early last week. The camp is scheduled to continue until Tuesday.
