Forest fires on the Greek mainland may affect shoulder-season sales to the destination, tour operators fear.
Fires have been burning across southwest Greece for more than a week in areas north of Athens down to the Peloponnese, killing at least 63 people.
Sunvil Holidays managing director Noel Josephides warned that, with Greek fires dominating the newspapers, profits will be hit.
He said: “September was looking okay, but the question for us with our commitments on charter flights is what will happen in the lates market.
“September and October put the icing on the cake for our financial year – you have to do well at this time.”
Planet Holidays managing director Mathilde Robert said: “We haven’t been affected and our clients know where the fires are, but it could have an impact on the mass-market business – late bookers may choose Spain instead of Greece.”
However, Argo Holidays sales and marketing director Kathryn Beadle said: “For Greece there are only about eight weeks left in the season and availability is limited – the people that want to go will.”
Staff at Olympic Holidays have donated money to the relief fund set up to help people affected by fires in Greece.
Spa Travel partner Paul Dayson said: “We haven’t had any problems in the area but we have a staff member going out to an area close to the fires next week so we are watching it closely.”
