Silversea Cruises buys expedition ship

Silversea Cruises Group has purchased expedition ship World Discoverer.

The ship will undergo a multi-million dollar refurbishment and be adapted to Silversea’s luxury style, before coming into service in spring 2008.

World Discoverer, which is yet to be renamed, will then join the four-ship operator and will accommodate 140 passengers.

The ship is already equipped with a strengthened hull so it can navigate through waters in remote destinations such as Antarctica.

Silversea president Amerigo Perasso said: “The mix of innovative land programmes, top-quality lecturers, enrichment programmes and exotic destinations will enable us to offer a very special experience that will appeal to the most discerning world travellers.

Earlier this year Silversea announced plans to purchase a 540-passenger ship from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2009.
