Alitalia’s future is in fresh doubt following the collapse of Italy’s coalition government last week.
The carrier’s prolonged privatisation had appeared close to a conclusion amid talks on a takeover by Air France-KLM, after the government identified the French-owned airline as its chosen buyer for the state’s 49.9% stake.
However, the government’s collapse has led rival bidder Air One to call for a review. Privately owned Air One is Italy’s second-biggest domestic carrier.
Talks between Air France and Alitalia were due to conclude next month following more than 18 months of uncertainty. Alitalia staff unions have threatened strike action if there are substantial job losses.
No date for an election has been set.
