Groups call on BBC to ban Lonely Planet’s Burma guide

Tourism Concern, the Trades Union Congress and the Burma Campaign UK have launched an online petition calling on the BBC Worldwide to axe the Lonely Planet guide to the country.

The organisations claim that the Lonely Planet guides, which were bought by BBC Worldwide last year, actively encourage tourists to visit the country, which has a ruling regime that is linked to mass human rights abuses.

Fifteen UK operators send tourists to Burma, arguing they do so independently and the money their clients spend does not benefit the military junta that rules the country.

Tourism Concern and the TUC also called for a tourism boycott of Burma last month following a violent crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations by the ruling military junta last September.
