First Project Genesis cruise ship to be called Oasis of the Seas

Oasis of the Seas is to be the name of the first Project Genesis cruise ship from Royal Caribbean International.

The ship will be the largest cruise ship in the world when it launches in late 2009. It will span 16 decks and carry 5,400 passengers, sailing out of Fort Lauderdale.

The name was selected from more than 91,000 entries in Royal Caribbean’s “Name that Ship” contest, which the company launched on January 18 in partnership with USA TODAY.

Entrants were invited to submit two names ending in “of the Seas” that best encapsulated the experiences of a Royal Caribbean cruise. Its second Project Genesis ship, which launches in 2010, will be named Allure of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean International president and chief executive Adam Goldstein said: “Our customers are remarkably passionate about Royal Caribbean. This naming contest has been a fantastic expression of their interest and commitment. We are thrilled to announce these two names and grateful to USA TODAY for partnering with us.”
