Brits consider taking a holiday more important to their happiness than owning a home, being in a relationship or starting a family, a new survey has revealed.
The online survey was undertaken by kayak.co.uk of 1,000 of its customers since the end of June. In it, 90% of respondents said taking at least one holiday a year is one of the five most important factors that contribute to their overall happiness.
Compared to this, 73% said owning their own home was important, 63% listed being in a relationship as one of their five key issues while just 42% named starting a family.
The majority, 98%, of respondents said they would forego luxuries in order to have their holiday while 76% are already saving up. More than a third of those questioned said they would ditch dining out and shopping for clothes and household goods to afford their holiday.
Kayak.co.uk business development director Annie Wilson said: “Brits have always been passionate about taking holidays and, as a nation, we’ve always been much more likely to explore the four corners of the earth than to buy the latest flat screen TV.
“There’s just something intoxicating to us about being somewhere else – whether it’s visiting a familiar hideaway or checking off a personal list of ‘must sees’.”
