The Olympics is a great showcase for the UK domestic market minister for tourism Margaret Hodge told attendees at a House of Commons Institute of Travel & Tourism event last week.
Hodge assured the industry that domestic tourism is a priority for the government and said the London 2012 Olympics would prove a catalyst for promoting the destination.
She said: “Tourism is fantastically important to government its one of the most important industries.”
“We’ve got a terrific opportunity with the Olympic games here in 2012. This is where we see we can get a step change.”
A new campaign to promote Britain and the Olympics will be launched at the Beijing Olympics in August with the government focusing for the next few years on the growth of tourism.
