Cyplon voices concerns about overcapacity in Cyprus

Cyplon Holidays has warned that Cyprus could be hit by overcapacity in 2000 as more operators look to expand their product range.

Managing director Harry Hajipapas, launching Cyplon’s 2000 programme, said the market could suffer from the growing number of companies entering the Cyprus market.

“I foresee problems in 2000 and though we are optimistic of growth of around 10% to 15%, we are treading carefully,” he said.

“More direct-sell operators who perhaps have only one destination are looking to Cyprus as a second option. There is a possibility the market could suffer from overcapacity, if not in 2000, then 2001.”

Hajipapas said Cyprus is becoming more appealing to the family market with the development of more theme parks and holiday villages.

Cyplon is featuring the newest of the theme parks – Water Mania in Limassol – along with the Ayios Elias Village in Protaras, opening next summer.

The operator has also added two all-inclusives for families – the Poseidonia Hotel in Limassol and the Laura Beach in Paphos. Hajipapas said their introduction followed demand from customers.

Flydrives have also been added along with the region of Pervolia where it features properties exclusive to Cyplon in the UK market.

Prices lead in at £545 per person for seven nights’ self-catering at the Christabelle Apartments in Ayia Napa.
