Air Europa flight from Glasgow skids off runway at Lanzarote

An Air Europa flight from Glasgow skidded off the runway as it landed at Lanzarote’s Arrecife Airport this morning and halted close to a beach.

None of the 74 passengers and crew on board were hurt. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was chartered by Thomas Cook and had departed Glasgow at 03.00.

Few details of the incident have been released. However, it appears the aircraft came into land without difficulty but failed to brake as normal. A spokesman for Air Europa said: “There was a problem on landing.”

Thomas Cook confirmed “a runway incident” involving flight AEA196. It said passengers had taken transfers to their hotels and it was seeking “a full explanation”.

Air Europa is part of Spanish travel group Globalia, based in Palma, Majorca, and operates a fleet of 32 aircraft.
