Crystal Cruises to downsize new ocean ships

Crystal Cruises has revealed it will downsize its latest three ocean ships.

All three new builds were announced in 2015, when Edie Rodriguez was the line’s chief executive.

The vessels will be now be between 60,000 and 65,000 tonnes with a maximum passenger capacity of 800 rather than 1,000.

Crystal Cruises’ chief executive Thomas Wolber told Travel Weekly US plans to build 48 private apartments on the top deck would “not materialise”.

The first of the three new ocean vessels is still scheduled for delivery in 2022.

The change in focus began last September when Crystal Symphony’s capacity was cut to 848 and some cabins were enlarged.

The capacity of Crystal Serenity, scheduled for a similar dry dock refurbishment in autumn, will also be reduced from 1,070 to 980.

Wolber took up his position after moving from Disney Cruise Line in September after Rodriguez left her role after four years with Crystal.

He said the rapid company’s growth may have caused Crystal to take their “eyes off the ball”.

He said: “You start diverting your attention a little bit from what is your core product and what really is the bread and butter of the business.”

Wolber reiterated Crystal’s wish to work with agents, calling for the line to renew its “focus” on “our travel trade partners” and “listen to them and their concerns”.
