Stansted flights running as normal after protests

Flights from Stansted Airport are running as normal today after protests yesterday caused the cancellation of 54 Ryanair flights.

A spokesman for the airport said “everything is running as normal” although he admitted there were some passengers still attempting to get onto flights after the cancellations.

The airport was closed to all flights for five hours after protestors from Plane Stupid broke into a secure area of the airport at 3.15am. Police arrested 57 people in connection with the demonstration.

Ryanair has called for BAA Stansted to explain why the protestors were able to breach Stansted security.

Ryanair’s head of communications Stephen McNamara said: “The security at BAA Stansted airport has once again failed.

“We need to know what measures the BAA is putting in place to prevent these repeated security failures. BAA Stansted is not fit for purpose. We need to break up the BAA monopoly as soon as possible to improve customer services and end these BAA cock-ups.”
