Tourists are beginning to be caught up in the security crisis in Sri Lanka.
A police curfew was imposed in the Kandy region overnight following a nationwide state of emergency being declared across the Indian Ocean country.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office warned of continuing reports of violent incidents.
“Sri Lanka Tourism is currently recommending that tourists and travellers do not travel into Kandy,” the FCO said.
“Certain social media sites and messaging platforms have been blocked or restricted nationwide.
“You should exercise caution, avoid protests and rallies, comply with local security requirements and consult the Sri Lankan Tourism Development Authority website for updates.”
The FCO added: “While the curfew does not impose restrictions on tourist activities, we are aware of some reports of tourists being caught up in movement restrictions.”
The curfew was lifted this morning “but it may be that there is still disruption to travel for a period,” the FCO said.
“Trains to and from Kandy are understood to be operating normally. Travellers should be aware that the curfew is expected to be re-imposed at 6pm on Thursday 8 March.”
