People1st welcomes apprenticeship funding

The decision by Gordon Brown to make 35,000 more apprenticeships available each year has been welcomed by sector skills council People 1st.

Brown plans to invest £140 million this year to bring the number of apprenticeships to more than 250,000.

Although it is not yet clear how many extra places will be available in the travel industry, People1st said the additional investment was good news.

Apprenticeship manager Preetkiran Sumal said: “This is a positive step. Now more than ever, businesses need to build a strong base of skilled employees to weather the economic conditions.”

The government announcement is likely to stimulate demand for apprenticeships. “They allow the employer to harness new talent and equipthe apprentice with a solid grounding in the skills required by the industry,“added Sumal.
