Aircraft crashes into home in Buffalo

A Continental Airlines passenger plane has crashed into a home in Buffalo, in upstate New York, killing 49 people.

The flight was approaching Buffalo Niagara International Airport from Newark, New Jersey at 10.20pm local time.

The aircraft became engulfed in flames and struck a house a few miles from the airport.

All 44 passengers and four crew on board the plane were killed, as well as one person on the ground, the Federal Aviation Administration and local officials said.

A woman and child were also hurt on the ground and officials described their injuries as minor. Surrounding homes suffered only minor damage. It is not yet known what caused the crash.

Continental Airlines said it was working closely with Colgar Air, which operated the route, to “provide as much support as possible for all concerned”.
