Carnival Cruise Line saves cabin steward stranded at sea for 22 hours

A cruise ship worker has been pulled from the sea by Carnival Glory’s crew after he went overboard 22 hours earlier from Norwegian Getaway.

The 33-year-old man had to tread water in the Gulf of Mexico – 21 miles north of Cuba – until he was rescued by the Carnival Cruise Line ship.

At around 3.20pm on Saturday, the man was spotted going overboard and around 10 minutes later an aircraft flew out of Miami to search for him.

According to reports, the US Coast Guard suspended its search when a steward on the Miami-based Carnival Glory spotted the unidentified man in the water on Sunday.

He was found 26 miles outside the coast guard’s search area after being dragged by the sea from Norwegian Getaway’s course.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said: “This is nothing short of miraculous.

“Kudos to the Carnival Glory team for this amazing effort to rescue a fellow seafarer.”

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line told Miami Herald: “We are so happy to know that the individual is safe and will soon be reunited with friends and family.

“We are also extremely grateful to Carnival Cruise Line and send our deepest thanks to the crew of Carnival Glory.”
