Carnival Corporation has reduced its carbon footprint by 25% in three years and is on track to meet nine other sustainability goals, according to a new report.
The company, made up of nine cruise line brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Cunard, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, first shared its sustainability goals in 2015.
Ten objectives, including reducing its carbon footprint, were identified with the goal of achieving them by 2020.
The company’s latest sustainability report, released on Thursday (July 19), shows how it has achieved its 25% carbon reduction goal three years ahead of schedule.
In total, the company reduced its carbon footprint by 26.3% relative to the 2005 baseline.
Other goals focus on equipping the company’s 103-ship fleet with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), improving water efficiency and reducing non-recycled waste.
Carnival Corporation also revealed 43% of its fleet can now use shoreside electric power when docked.
The company uses the United Nation’s 17 sustainability development goals as a framework to identify new environmental management, energy efficiency, health and safety objectives.
Bill Burke, chief maritime officer for Carnival Corporation, said: “We recognise that to be a responsible global organisation and good corporate citizen, we need to have sustainability ingrained in all aspects of our operation across our nine global cruise line brands and more than 100 ships.
“We are committed to consistently exceeding the expectations of our guests for great vacations but we are also deeply committed to being a model for sustainable tourism throughout the world.
“It is through the dedication of our passionate and diverse workforce that we are able to make such great strides in every aspect of our operations.
“We congratulate each of our 120,000 employees for helping us achieve and exceed our carbon reduction goal well ahead of schedule.”
Meanwhile, Carnival Corporation announced it has donated $10,000 to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation.
This donation will provide support to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, an independent school in South Africa.
